JoiPlay

From Outsider Arthouse

JoiPlay is an Android app that allows you to play HTML5 games on your phone without needing to be online, since mobile phone browsers are subject to certain security restrictions when running local files. Succubus Stories is compatible with this application for offline play. Note: these instructions should also work for Hex.

Instructions[edit]

Download and install JoiPlay[edit]

The app is available on the Play store. Download and install the app on your phone via the Play store as you would any other app.

Download the "Offline Browser" version of the game[edit]

Go to the game's Itch.io to get "Offline Browser" version of the free edition or the patron edition. Download the game to your phone.

Unzip the game files[edit]

The game will be downloaded as an archive (i.e., a zip file), which will need to be extracted before you can use it. You will need an app capable of extracting zip archives. Google Files and ZArchiver are two potential options you can use to browse for the zip archive and extract it.

Open the JoiPlay app and set up the game[edit]

Once the game is extracted, open the JoiPlay app. You will need to confirm multiple times, and grant the app file access. Once that's done, press the + button on the bottom right. Fill out the information, such as the name of the app and the version number. It's not important that this information is accurate.

The app will ask you to choose an "executable." Navigate to the extracted files and select "index.html." You can set up an icon if you want, the game's "assets" folder contains images you can use.

Launching and playing the game[edit]

Click the game in JoiPlay's game list to run it. The game should open to the start screen (an 18+ warning). The game will open by default in landscape orientation. It is recommended you play the game in portrait orientation. To change the game's orientation, click the small arrow at the top of the screen, opening a control panel. In this panel there should be an option to rotate the orientation. JoiPlay should "remember" this setting each time you open the game afterword.

Benefits to using JoiPlay[edit]

Using the JoiPlay app has a few benefits over playing the game in your normal browser.

  • Better offline play. While the offline browser version of the game will run in a normal browser, it may be unstable, and game media, including images and sounds, may not load properly, or at all.
  • Saves are permanent. Browsers, especially on mobile devices, will only save so much data, and only for so long, before old data starts to be deleted. This can lead to save data being lost on mobiles if you don't play the game very regularly. JoiPlay has its own storage and can keep data more or less permanently.
  • Improved performance. Performance on the JoiPlay app is generally better than the online or offline browser version, requiring fewer system resources, loading media and other data more quickly, among other things. Performance is comparable to the Windows executable version of the game.
